After a few months of life they begin to fiddle around with greens, copying what the older elephants do, learning from them how to strip nutritious bark from the stems. While the roughage is extremely important for them, it is not life sustaining and they still require mothers milk. Any baby elephant orphaned less than 3 years of age will die, unless the conditions are extremely favorable, in which case an orphan over two years of age may just pull through. More often than not they don’t, and studies have shown that elephants under 5 years of age are extremely vulnerable when their mothers die. The effects of poaching is devastating, with far reaching consequences as the dependent young of the poached mother are all doomed to die as a result. Anyone tempted to buy ivory should give this some thought, just how much pain and anguish their decorative piece represents must surely make it not worth owning. Each bit of ivory has a blood trail of pain and heartbreak in its wake.
